Burleigh Japan Black, a 4.6% ABV Japanese inspired Black Lager scored an impressive review, along with 93 points to take out the Gold Medal in the Best Black Beer category, in the world-renowned competition. Cheers to that!

Conducted by the esteemed Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), the judges noted that our winning brew is “an unabashedly complex black lager with an easy drinking appeal.” The judges highlighted Burleigh Japan Blacks “walnut colour, aromas of smoked chocolate soufflé, finely carbonated, dryish medium-to-full body and a tingling, medium-length black raisin bread and toasted nuts finish”.

The 2022 World Beer Championships list of winners was released in late January and we were the only Australian brewery to place within the Gold Medal category!

Brewmaster and Co-Founder, Brennan Fielding reflects on the 74 world medals won over the last decade, “As brewers, it’s humbling to see our Burleigh beers recognised on a world stage. I’m so proud of our local team and the hard work they put in every single day. It takes a whole community to brew a beer and to be awarded gold at this level is very humbling – we’re always talking about new beers here at Burleigh and this award represents world class.”

Burleigh Japan Black was one of our most popular Taphouse Exclusive beers in the Taphouse over summer as a one batch only brew. It sold out very quickly and received overwhelmingly great feedback from our local community. Burleigh Japan Black is a very easy, approachable dark lager – it’s not at all intimidating for those who would usually shy away from a darker beer. The brewers are already working on the next batch. We can’t wait to bring it back!
