Artist In Residence – Rome Torti
As brewers who are single-mindedly focussed and passionate about brewing seriously good beer, Burleigh Brewing can relate to skateboarders’ passion for the spirit, creativity and exhilaration of their sport. So, in June 2019, we’re turning ‘Go Skateboarding Day’ officially an annual, one-day global celebration of skateboarding, into a month-long festival, launching celebrations with Artist In Residence.
This month’s artist in residence is a super special one for us!
Introducing a retrospective collection of photography by the much loved Australian-based (and proud Gold Coast local) photographer Rome Torti.
Capturing an era of skateboarding lifestyle spanning a decade, each picture tells its own story. It can be a raw and gritty world, but like the radiant energy that followed Rome everywhere he went, he saw nothing but positivity even whilst battling a glioblastoma brain tumour for the last 5 years of his life.
Rome was a senior photographer for Slam Skateboarding Magazine as well as being a regular contributor to The Skateboarder’s Journal, Australian Skateboarding Magazine, and New Zealand’s Manual Magazine. He also had his work published in what is considered the holy grail of Skateboarding Magazine’s; Thrasher. His work was also featured in advertising for the likes of GLOBE, RIPCURL and VOLCOM. Whilst undergoing treatment he was also appointed as the Team Manager at Element Skateboards, this was a happy period for Rome as he was able to work in the industry he held close to his heart, and he was also able to provide for his new family and provide respite from the overwhelming world of cancer.
While many hold close in their hearts cherished memories of Rome as a truly remarkable human, this insight into his photography is a legacy he leaves behind for all to treasure.
All profits from this month’s exhibition with be donated to another young Mother and her family battling Brain Cancer Katherine Abraham
